Prisoner assaulted at Swakop

MAGGI BARNARD

A PRISONER was seriously assaulted by Police officers at the Swakopmund Police cells last week.

Joey Yon junior (27), who has been charged with housebreaking, sustained multiple abrasions after he was hit eight to 10 times with a whip or stick on his back, arms, legs and chest.

His hands were seriously injured and swollen as he tried to stop the blows with his hands.

According to his statement, he was allegedly held down by four Policemen. Yon's father, a well-known Walvis Bay building contractor also called Joey, referred queries to the family's lawyer Robert Pohl of Jan Olivier Lawyers.

According to Pohl, Yon junior asked to see a doctor on Tuesday. When he was apparently refused he allegedly hit a Police officer and was allegedly assaulted by Police officers.

Yon's parents claimed he was denied medical attention after the incident. Pohl said it was only after he had arrived at the Police station and asked for a private medical examination, that the Police released him. He was transferred to the Swakopmund State Hospital.

Inspector Bernhard Uirab, Swakopmund Station Commander confirmed that the incident. He said Yon junior had laid a charge of assault, which was being investigated.

According to Uirab, Yon junior hit the Police officer first - on the eye and mouth. "When I arrived at the station, the officer's eye was swollen and his lip cut open from the two blows." Uirab said he then sent Yon junior to the hospital.

Uirab said Yon junior was told the officers first had to attend to prisoners who had asked to see a doctor on Monday. "He was told to wait his turn." This was when Yon allegedly hit the officer.

Uirab claimed Police officers were constantly "abused" by prisoners.
"We are continuously being attacked and hit, or thrown with pap or coffee.

Sometimes it gets too much," he said when asked whether this kind of incident had happened before.

Pohl said the family had instructed him to lodge a civil claim for damages. He said they were also preparing a bail application to keep Yon junior out of the Police cells for his own safety.
