Standoff at Marco resolved

HUGH ELLIS

MARCO Fishing and the Namibia Seamen and Allied Workers Union (Nasawu) have ended a three-week lock-out which reportedly affected the company's productivity adversely.

Nasawu President Hango Paulus and Marco Managing Director Appie Louw both confirmed that a final agreement had been signed late on Thursday.

The basic features of the agreement are an increase in the daily rate for seagoing crew from N$20 of N$28. Commission for hake was increased from N$52 to N$59 a ton.

Commissions for other types of fish were also increased. Deck-hands on hake trawler operations will now be paid N$63 a day. Contracts for sea-going employees were also revised, and workers will now be paid N$300 as backpay.

The company and union agreed an increase in the hourly rate for factory workers, ranging from N$5 to N$6,15 for the lowest paid workers and from N$7,68 to N$ 8,78 for supervisors.

A video camera in the factory, which workers had wanted removed, will remain for the time being. But Paulus said the union would protest if the camera was used in disciplinary hearings.

Marco locked out their workers on September 25, refusing to let them come back to work until they accepted an initial offer, which the union had said was insufficient.

The company said at the time it was imposing the lock-out to avoid a strike at the height of the fishing season. The union then accused it of negotiating in bad faith.
