Wednesday, October 23, 2002 - Web posted at 9:45:45 GMT Action urged on sea tragedies A DTA-UDF coalition parliamentarian has said Government should make it obligatory for fishing companies to have their own search and rescue services before they are permitted to operate in Namibian waters. |
|
Phillemon Moongo, speaking during debate on the International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue in the National Assembly last week, said Namibia could not afford tragedies in which fishermen lost their lives. He maintained that the Meob Bay disaster earlier this year, in which 19 seamen perished off Luderitz, could have been avoided if there were search and rescue operations to respond promptly in such cases. Moongo said Government should not leave it to fishing factories to train their workers because "those fishing factories will not train their workers properly to swim or to search when there are accidents at sea. Namibia cannot afford anymore to lose people at sea". "The Government is supposed to conduct search and rescue operations and co-operate with neighbouring states ... My impression is that Namibia is ill-prepared for unforeseen accidents," he added. "I propose that all ships must be tested for fitness before entering Namibian sea waters," Moongo said. |
