Algeria rebels kill two, wound three in hotel raid

ALGIERS - Suspected Islamic rebels raided a hotel in eastern Algeria, killing two people and wounding three, the official Algerian news agency APS said on Friday, quoting government security forces.

The killing took place on Thursday night when rebels broke into Talla Mokrane Hotel in the Tizi-Ghenif area of Tizi Ouzou, 90 km (55 miles) east of Algiers, the forces said.

In a similar raid in the same region, rebels broke into a hotel in the Boughni area two years ago and killed four people by slashing their throats.

The mountainous Tizi Ouzou region is a stronghold for Islamic rebels locked in a brutal conflict with the government since early 1992, when the authorities cancelled a general election which radical Islamists were poised to win.

More than 100,000 people have been killed since then. Nampa-Reuters
