HARARE - A white opposition youth leader has been abducted in Zimbabwe, amid mounting political tensions ahead of watershed presidential polls due in March, his mother told AFP Friday.

Thomas Spicer, 17, the Movement for Democratic Change's (MDC's) deputy organising secretary for youth in Harare province, was ambushed along with 11 other youths after their car broke down outside Harare late Thursday, his mother, Edwina, said.

Thomas, who is fluent in the local Shona language, was held overnight, tied to a tree, beaten and kicked, Edwina Spicer said.

"In the morning, he was taken away into the bush."

She said some of the youths accompanying her son had managed to escape, some had been abducted along with Thomas and one had been hospitalised in Harare.

She said the group had been distributing MDC campaign literature ahead of the presidential poll. Nampa-Sapa-AFP
