U.S. bombs kill seven in eastern Afghanistan - AIP

ISLAMABAD - U.S.-led forces bombed a small village on Monday in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar, under the rule of local mujahideen commanders, killing seven people, the Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) said.

U.S. planes bombed the village of Shamshad, only eight km (five miles) from the Pakistani border, in a pre-dawn raid killing seven and wounding several members of the new administration, AIP added.

"We don't understand the purpose of this bombing. There are no Arabs here nor any Taliban," an Afghan soldier posted at the Torkham border, was quoted as saying.

The report could not be independently verified.

U.S.-led forces targeted the same village on Sunday killing 30 people, AIP said.

Shamshad was a centre of mujahideen, or holy warriors, during the battle against forces of the former Soviet Union.

U.S. jets have pounded targets in Afghanistan to punish the Taliban militia for harbouring Osama bin Laden, prime suspect in the September 11 attacks on the United States. Nampa-Reuters
