More arrested over Kabila assassination

KINSHASA - Several top security officers in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have been arrested in a probe into the assassination of president Laurent Kabila, it was reported on Friday.

The newspapers Le Potentiel and Le Phare, close to the unarmed opposition, reported that Leta Mangasa, administrator general of the National Intelligence Agency (ANR), was among those to be questioned about Kabila's killing by a bodyguard last month.

Also arrested were General Yav Nawej, commander of the Kinshasa garrison, thepapers said, and confirmed earlier reports that Colonel Eddy Kapend, a former key aide to the assassinated president, has been arrested.

The commission of inquiry was created by new President Joseph Kabila, the slainpresident's 29-year-old son.

It includes representatives of Angola, Zimbabwe and Namibia, all allies with theKinshasa regime in its two-and-a-half-year war against rebels backed by Rwandaand Uganda.

None of the arrests was confirmed by government officials.
