Bayern go down to shock loss

BERLIN - European champions Bayern Munich began the new Bundesliga season with a shock 1-0 defeat at newly promoted Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday as title hopefuls Borussia Dortmund beat Nuremberg 2-0.

Other championship contenders also had convincing starts.

Last season's fourth-placed side Bayer Leverkusen defeated Wolfsburg 2-1, Brazilian defender Lucio getting both goals, while Kaiserslautern won 4-0 at 1860 Munich.

A pinpoint long pass from the halfway line in the 23rd minute from Moenchengladbach's Marcel Witeczek caught the Bayern defence napping, leaving Arie van Lent free to fire past Oliver Kahn for the only goal of the game.

Borussia Dortmund made their ambitions clear when they beat Nuremberg 2-0, with both goals scored by their record new signing, Brazilian striker Marcio Amoroso.

Dortmund's other major new debutant, Czech giant Jan Koller, headed on a pass from Stefan Reuter in the 12th minute, which Amoroso brought down well before rounding the Nuremberg defence cleverly and slotting home.

Amoroso picked up a poor clearance in the 33rd minute and volleyed the ball past Nuremberg goalkeeper Darius Kampa.

Bayer Leverkusen started with a 2-1 victory over VfL Wolfsburg, both goals coming from defender Lucio, who has been the subject of interest from Lazio.

Markus Feldhoff scored a consolation goal for the visitors four minutes from time.

Kaiserslautern hammered 1860 Munich, with defender Jeff Strasser opening the scoring after an impressive solo run.

Veteran striker Olaf Marschall made it 2-0 with a header from Mario Basler's corner on the hour, and Swedish striker Joergen Pettersson made it 3-0 with a spectacular 25-metre drive.

Harry Koch added the fourth goal from the penalty spot after 83 minutes.

Georgian midfielder Levan Kobiashvili opened Freiburg's account from the penalty spot in the 49th minute to set his team on their way against Werder Bremen after a questionable foul on Andreas Zeyer.

Ibrahim Tanko scored a second three minutes from time before Ismail Coulibaly made it 3-0.

Canadian Paul Stalteri was sent off after 83 minutes for a second bookable offence.

Hamburg had a poor start at Cottbus, where Vasile Miriuta scored the winner in injury time from a penalty. - Nampa-Reuters
