Ball Games kickoff in Walvis Bay

THE annual Confederation Of School Sports Associations of Southern Africa (Cossasa) Ball Games were officially launched in Walvis Bay on Friday.

Before launching the fourth Cossasa Ball Games, Namibia Schools Sport Union President Pretorius Magudu told those present that the games were not about winning and losing but more about participating.

He appealed to the officials to be objective so as not to have a repeat of what happened at the previous games hosted by Swaziland the previous year, when some events had to be abandoned due to poor refereeing.

He urged residents to come out in their numbers and support the games, and the Namibian athletes in particular.

Also speaking at the occasion, Cossasa President Franz Gertze handed over "the patronage of the Ball Games" to Walvis Bay Mayor, Theresia Samaria, saying that he was confident in her ability to be a good host to the visiting teams.

Gertze also appealed to the citizens and business community of Walvis Bay to be actively involved in making the stay of the visitors a memorable one.

Upon accepting the patronage, Samaria promised to take good care of the athletes.

She added that her Municipality was doing a lot to foster a sense of co-operation amongst sports people, hence the erection of a multipurpose sport complex.

Apart from host Namibia, only South Africa and Lesotho's representatives witnessed the launch.

The official launch was followed by the inspection of the playing facilities for football, netball, basketball and netball by the Cossasa technical committee.

Accommodation facilities were also inspected.

The Cossasa and NSSU executive expressed their gratitude to Namib Mills through their Pasta Polana brand, for sponsoring the event to the tune of N$50 000. - Nampa
