Ali named boxer of the tournamentALI Nuumbembe was crowned as the boxer of the tournament at the Inter-regional Boxing Development tournament which took place at Ongwediva over the weekend. Boxers from Oshana, Oshikoto, Kunene, Ohangwena and Omusati regions competed in the various weight categories of the tournament which was a culmination of the series of development tournaments that took place in the five regions. Besides Nuumbembe, Sakaria Naunyango was voted best senior boxer and Walde Iyambo as best junior boxer. Mangulukeni Hamata from Ongwediva scooped the best female boxer award while Abmerk Shidjuu and Walter Kandjengo walked away as best challenger and best silver medalist, respectively. Oshana region, which produced 25 gold medalists, won the team of the tournament trophy. Although more that 300 boxers were initially expected, only 180 turned up of which only 20 were women. National Boxing Development co-ordinator, Ambrose Kandjii, told Nampa that the tournament served as a platform for talent identification and for regional boxers to gain national exposure. The tournament also served as a training ground for 25 referees and judges who qualified as national adjudicators. The programme's next stop will be the Kavango and Caprivi regions where a similar tournament will also be held. The Karas, Hardap and Erongo regions have already been covered last year. The National Boxing Development Programme, the brain child of the Ministry of Basic Education, Sport and Culture in conjunction with the Namibia Amateur Boxing Federation, aims to develop young and talented boxers and expose them to stiff competition at a young age.- Nampa |
