Santos gunning for league honours

FOUR-TIMES NFA Cup winners Chief Santos of Tsumeb will launch their league title chase with no changes to last year's squad."

"We have not recruited new players and we have also not lost any player to another club or through retirement," club treasurer Karl Damaseb told Nampa on Tuesday."

"We would like to emerge as league winners at the end of this season, and also retain the NFA Cup which has been in our possession for the last three seasons," he said.

Santos first won the NFA Cup in 1991 and then again in 1997, 1999 and 2000.

But now Santos, the Premier League's most consistent side over the years, has its eyes firmly set on the league title.

The league competition is scheduled to start in less than three weeks from now, on August 11.

The club managed to end fourth in last season's league competition, all without a fulltime coach.

Former Brave Warriors striker, Gerros !Urikhob who has been moved to linkman at Santos, has also acquitted himself well in the position of player/coach.

But Damaseb said: "we have a player/coach at the moment but we are looking for a coach."

Damaseb indicated that the club wants to beef up its striking force to relieve Augustinus Mukoya and Ricardo Witbeen, who have been doing the scoring for Santos all year round.

Witbeen has recently been drafted into the senior national team where he is expected to gain more experience.

It is hoped that the experience will rub off on the rest of the squad in their quest to win all major trophies in the new season.

"We need strikers. We don't have a problem with the defence but goals are needed. That is what makes you win a game," he said.

Four of the club's players - Mukoya, Witbeen, Rodney Doeseb and Nelson Geingob - have donned national colours this year.

"The club at present has 22 committed players," Damaseb said.

"They have trained non-stop since the end of the previous season and took part in practice matches against other Premier league clubs to keep the players match fit," he added.

Santos lost 2-1 against coastal giants Blue Waters and defeated Oshakati City 3-1 last weekend as part of its warm-up schedule for the new season.

Meanwhile, Damaseb urged supporters to pay their membership fees.

"That is one department where we failed to raise money, last year. We want to encourage supporters to make their annual contributions from now on," he said. - Nampa
