Mandela diagnosed with prostrate cancer

JOHANNESBURG - Former South African president Nelson Mandela, above, has been diagnosed with microscopic prostrate cancer and is to undergo a seven-week radiotherapy course, the Nelson Mandela Foundation announced yesterday.

"The cancer is not of a high grade and should not decrease Mr Mandela's lifespan. Many men of the former president's age have this condition," the foundation said in a statement in Johannesburg.

"Nevertheless, based on current knowledge about this tumour and how it should best be treated, a decision has been made by Mr Mandela's team of doctors to commence treatment on the former president."

"The foundation said medical tests at the end of last year indicated a raised level of prostrate specific antigen (PSA) in Mandela's blood. - Nampa-Sapa
