Tuesday, July 3, 2001 - Web posted at 12:27:12 PM GMT South Africa win inline skating series SOUTH Africa's under-17 and under-19 teams comfortably won their inline skating matches against Namibia in Windhoek over the weekend, but Namibia's juniors had several opportunities to beat their more fancied opponents. The first encounter between the under-17s was a thrilling affair as Namibia and South Africa were deadlocked at 4-all at the end of normal time. The match went into a penalty shoot-out and once again the teams were deadlocked at 1-all before the match was decided by a sudden death penalty which Namibia won, to scoop the match 6-5. South Africa, however, came back strongly in their second match, and although Namibia held them at 2-all halfway through the match, the South Africans put on the pressure to eventually win 7-2. South Africa won the final match 8-1 to take the series by two matches to one. South Arica won the first encounter between the under-19s 7-4, while the second match was tied at 4-all at the end of normal time. The match had to be decided by penalties with South Africa going on to win 6-5. In the final encounter between the under-19s, Namibia was leading 4-2 halfway through the match, but South Africa came back strongly to eventually win 8-5 and take the series 3-0. The trophy for the best under-19 player was won by a South African, while Basti Faber of Swakopmund won the trophy for the best under-17 player. Both Namibian teams included a female, with Danniella Grutemeyer playing for the under-17s and Nadja Schmidt for the under-19s. |
