Wednesday, July 18, 2001 - Web posted at 9:52:04 GMT Uruguay and Costa Rica draw MEDELLIN - Uruguay and Costa Rica played to a 1-1 draw on Monday night to remain joint leaders in Copa America group C while Honduras enhanced their chances of a place in the knockout stages with a 2-0 win over nine-man Bolivia. Amado Guevara struck twice in the pouring rain, in the 53rd and 68th, to secure victory for Honduras. Bolivia, who had started strongly into the second half before Guevara's double, had Marco Antonio Sandy and Milton Coimbra sent off in the 72nd and 75th minute respectively. Costa Rica grabbed a 27th-minute lead from Paulo Cesar Wanchope, but Carlos Morales levelled for Uruguay eight minutes into the second half. Uruguay and Costa Rica top the standings with four points apiece, Hondoras have three and Bolivia are eliminated with zero points. Costa Rica and Honduras (as well as group B team Mexico) are participating by invitation at the South American championships. Argentina are not playing at the tournament which was first postponed until next year - due to violence in Colombia highlighted by the abduction of one leading football official by leftist rebels - but then staged as planned on short notice. - Nampa-Sapa-DPA |
