Duval posts first major victory LYTHAM ST ANNES - David Duval, once bracketed alongside compatriot Phil Mickelson as the best current player not to win a major, changed that in emphatic style on Sunday with his three-shot triumph at the British Open. The former world number one, who chased Tiger Woods hard during the final round of last year's Open at St Andrews before fading with an eight at the infamous Road Hole, closed with a 67 to finish on a 10-under-par total of 274." "You get four chances each year (to win a major) and you have to get a lot of things go right for you to even get into a position to win the golf tournament," he said. "Then you have to do it." "Today I almost didn't make a bogey at all. I did all I needed to do and I feel really good about that." The American, who has twice placed second in the Masters at Augusta, took the lead for the first time in the championship when he birdied the par-five sixth on Sunday to move to eight- under overall. Although he later dropped his only shot of the day after finding the sand at the par-three 12th for Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez to close the gap to just one, the American was never caught over the last 12 holes. Wearing his trademark sun-glasses, Duval held his nerve over Lytham's tough finishing stretch and strung together five successive pars to close the door on the chasing pack. He said later he had not once looked at the scoreboard and thought his lead was only two, or perhaps just one, as he approached the 72nd hole. "I thought I was probably two ahead, but I never looked at the board," he said. "I didn't know exactly where I stood until I got to the green and saw I was three shots in front. You just face shots you gotta hit. It sounds kind of simple but that's how I played it." - Nampa-Sapa-AP |
