Monday, July 23, 2001 - Web posted at 14:38:19 GMT Bafana upset by Malawi BLANTYRE - Malawi upset South Africa 1-0 in the Cosafa Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, grabbing their deserved win through a controversial late penalty. Patrick Mabedi stroked home a 84th minute winner from the spot after Themba Mnguni had somewhat harshly been adjudged to have handled the ball in the South Africa area. Television replays showed it had bounced off his shoulder but the result was a deserved triumph for the home side, who had been beaten 2-0 in South Africa in a World Cup qualifier seven days earlier - their fourth successive defeat at the hands of the Bafana Bafana. South Africa's loss continues their poor record in the annual southern African competition, where they have only once before reached the semifinals stage. It was veteran goalkeeper Andre Arendse who came up with a string of fine stops in the second half to keep them in the game. Arendse stopped a long-range shot from Malawi captain Meke Mwase, brilliantly turned around John Maduka's header and then denied Mabedi at close range as the South African defence fell apart. South Africa might have pulled off a last-gasp equaliser but David Kanemeyer's powerful volley flew straight into the arms of Malawi keeper Swadic Sanudi. The win set off furious celebration across Blantyre, with teargas fired to clear crowds away from the stadium after the game. Malawi now play defending champions Zimbabwe in the semifinals in a fortnight, while two-time winners Zambia play Angola at home in the other semfinal in Lusaka on August 18. - Nampa-Reuters |
