Wildcats in upset win over Starzz

NATASHA DIERGAARDT

A HUGE upset was caused when leading women's basketball team, Civics Starzz, suffered their first defeat at the University of Namibia (UNAM) gym on Saturday night.

Starzz were beaten by archrivals Unam Wildcats for the first time since the start of the Nampower Namibia Basketball Federation (NBF) league two months ago.

The university team was overjoyed with their win over Starzz in their second clash, which ended in a score of 60 points to 55.

The two teams now share top spot with 11 points each.

In the main game on Saturday, undefeated men's champions Tomahawks got a run for their money when Bladez, the university's third team, proved to be a hard a nut to crack.

The first half ended in dramatic style as Bladez took a 38-36 lead just before the break.

The short Bladez players kept the lanky Tomahawks players on their toes, by pushing forward with a lot of power exerted from players like Mandume Sakaria and Petrus Kamatoto.

Mervin Katjiuongua scored most of Bladez' points and ended up top scorer of the game.

He scored a total of 33 points and was closely followed by Tomahawks' Nick Werner, with 31 points.

Werner has established himself as a force to be reckoned with.

He has a powerful right arm that downs all three-point shot attempts he makes and is a definite contender for Player of the Year.

Clinton da Costa was the Tomahawks' playmaker and was ably assisted by Paul Cassanga who helped to regain the lead in the game, which eventually ended in a 91 to 80 points win for Tomahawks.

Tomahawks now have 12 points on the log, followed by Bladez and Rebels who share second spot with nine points each.

In an earlier match played on Friday night Unam Rebels continued their winning streak against Unam Bladez in a dramatic 108-107 victory.

The two teams were also separated by only one point last week when Rebels defeated Bladez by 74 to 73 points.

Other games over the weekend include a 108 to 35 victory for TransNamib Divas over Dolphins while Unam Rebels beat Rehoboth Basketball Club by 70 points to 61 in Rehoboth. - Nampa
