Bassingthwaighte excels in SA

CARMEN Bassingthwaighte led Namibia's junior cyclists to their best ever performance at the annual Eric van Enter South African junior cycling championships last weekend.

The 14-year-old Bassingthwaighte had to cycle in the girls' under-18 category, in the absence of an under-15 category, but this did not deter her as she put in a brilliant performance to destroy the field.

Bassingthwaighte went on to win the girls' under-18 road race, beating the South African junior champion, Engela Conradie, by more than four minutes.

Bassingthwaighte also won a silver medal in the girls' under-18 kermesse, while she came fifth in the hillclimb competition.

Namibian team mate Jowina van Staden came second in the girls' under-18 road race to win a silver medal.

In the girls' under-14 category Helletjie van Staden won a silver medal in the under-14 kermesse, while she came fourth in the hillclimb and sixth in the road race.

In the boys' under-12 category the Namibian team consisting of Jens Rust, Marnus Verdoes, Jan Hendrik Verdoes and Robert Laaser came second in the team category.

Jan Hendrik Verdoes came second overall in the under-12 hillclimb, while he came fourth in the road race as well as the kermesse.

In the boys' under-14 category Namibia came fifth overall, while Erwin van Wyk came fourth in the road race.

In the boys' under-18 category the Namibian team came sixth overall.

In the boys' under-16 category Axel Foerster came ninth in the road race, while Marc Bassingthwaighte was tenth and Raphael Bertschinger 12th in the boys' under-18 road race.

The Namibian team of 25 cyclists came fourth overall out of eleven teams.
