Namibia gain revenge against Zim

Namibia gained revenge with a 19-15 victory against Zimbabwe in their African Cup rugby match in Windhoek on Saturday, but had to withstand late pressure from the visitors to hold on for victory.

The victory follows their surprise 27-26 loss against Zimbabwe a week ago in Bulawayo, but it was a lacklustre affair full of handling errors and few backline attacking moves.

Namibian fullback Jaco Kotze opened the scoring with a penalty in the fifth minute, but Zimbabwe took the lead in the 12th minute when eighthman Costa Dinha scored a try.

From the restart Namibia immediately went on the attack and flanker Dirkie Beukes scored a try from a forward maul in the 16th minute to restore their lead at 8-5.

Zimbabwe drew level through a penalty by scrumhalf Gary Hewitt in the 22nd minute and had a chance two minutes later to take the lead, but Hewitt missed with another penalty attempt.

Instead it was Namibia who took the lead in the 36th minute following a great break by captain Wolfie Duvenhage which took play close to Zimbabwe's tryline.

From the ensuing maul lock Eben Isaacs went over for a try to give Namibia a 13-8 lead at the break.

Kotze immediately increased Namibia's lead with a penalty in the first minute of the second half, but five minutes later Zimbabwean centre Bedford Chimbima broke clean through Namibia's backline to score a try which Hewitt converted to make the score 16-15.

Jaco Kotze added another penalty in the 51st minute to make the score 19-15.

Zimbabwe launched several attacks in the final quarter of the game with the particularly impressive performance of Emmanuel Mukandi, Ryan Dube and Victor Olonga, but gritty defence by Namibia kept them at bay.
