Monday, July 16, 2001 - Web posted at 11:14:23 GMT Hakkinen wins British GP SILVERSTONE - Former two-time world champion Mika Hakkinen in a McLaren-Mercedes won his first race since last August by capturing the British Grand Prix yesterday. The Ferrari of Michael Schumacher, looking to equal Alain Prost's record of 51 Formula One victories, finished second 33,6 seconds behind but he lengthened his lead in the season standings over David Coulthard, who lasted just three laps. Brazilian Rubens Barrichello, in the other Ferrari, was third, 59 seconds behind the winner after the 60 laps of the 5,141-kilometre Silverstone circuit. Juan Pablo Montoya of Colombia in a Williams-BMW was fourth with the Sauber-Petronas drivers, Kimi Raikkonen and Nick Heidfeld fifth and sixth. It was the 19th career victory for Finland's Hakkinen but first since August 2000 at the Belgian Grand Prix. Coulthard, who won the last two races here, started third but he was bumped slightly by Jarno Trulli's Jordan-Honda just after the first corner and went off the track. Coulthard managed to continue but his race ended by the end of the third lap when the Briton spun out for good. Schumacher now has a 84-47 lead over Coulthard with six races to go and almost has an unbeatable lead as the German ace seeks his fourth world title. Hakkinen's victory now gives him 19 points for the season. Hakkinen overtook Schumacher, who had the pole position, at the start of the fifth lap and built up nearly a two-second lead by the end of the lap. By 10 laps the lead was up to 11,6 seconds. At 20 laps Hakkinen had a 25,9-second lead over Montoya, who had moved into second place. A lap later Hakkinen pitted and gave Montoya a short lead. Montoya went in for fuel and tyres at the end of 25 laps putting Hakkinen back into first. Schumacher finally made his only pit stop at the end of the 39th lap and moved back into second when Montoya had to pit a second time. - Nampa-Sapa-AFP |
