Wednesday, January 31, 2001 - Web posted at 8:53:22 AM GMT Top award for Doc Jubber THE president of the Namibia Hockey Union (NHU), Dr Laurie Jubber received a singular honour recently when the International Hockey Federation (IHF) presented him with a Presidents Award in recognition of his efforts to develop the game in Namibia. Dr Jubber, who has been a hockey administrator in Namibia for more than 40 years, received the award at the annual congress of the IHF in Paris last November from the president of the IHF, Juan Calzados at a glittering function attended by hockey administrators from all over the world." "It was a great occasion for me. I always considered hockey as a sport and not a business and that one has to play the game to enjoy it and see the youngsters coming through," he said when he was honoured by the Namibia National Sport Council in Windhoek yesterday. He also expressed appreciation to Air Namibia for making his trip possible and for the NNSC for honouring him. The president of the NNSC, Elliot Hiskia, praised Jubber, saying that he had done a lot for Namibian sport and that he had shown that through teamwork one could reach high honours. Dr Jubber was presented with a special Presidents Award brochure, while the IHF also donated a digital camera to the NHU, which it will now use to send updates on its progress to the IHF. Dr Jubber also expressed his optimism about the future of hockey in Namibia after attending the official opening of the Tafel Lager Indoor Hockey League on Monday evening." "There were a lot of new youngsters from different ethnic groups and the standard was very high," he said. On Monday evening Namibia Breweries sponsored the Namibian indoor hockey league for the third year in a row to the amount of N$15 000. Namibia Breweries' Mike Reilly congratulated the hockey fraternity on its great team spirit and expressed his company's commitment to strengthen their relationship with hockey. Meanwhile, Pirates and Wanderers have taken the early lead in the men's Premier League after the first matches were completed last week. Pirates beat the defending indoor champions, Windhoek Old Boys 5-4, with Reagan Graig scoring a hat-trick and Dane McTeer two goals for Pirates, while WOB replied with a goal by Russel Bartlett and a hat-trick by Archie Botha. Wanderers beat DTS 5-4 after the teams were tied 3-all at halftime. For Wanderers Christo Bronkhorst scored a hattrick and Derek Bronkhorst and Riaan Kruger one goal each, while Aiden Bates scored two goals for DTS and Herman Zapke and Darren Roberts one each.
