Monday, January 29, 2001 - Web posted at 7:41:31 AM GMT Bartlett sees off Burkina RUSTENBURG - Bafana Bafana, their performance ele VAT ed by in-form striker Shaun Bartlett, collected their sixth World Cup qualifier point with their 1-0 win against Burkina Faso in blazing heat at Rustenburg's Olympia Stadium on Saturday. Bartlett, in fiery striking form, got the Bafana off to a winning start 17 minutes into the game when he collected a through ball down the middle from Delron Buckley after a Pierre Issa free kick. Bartlett's impressively controlled the ball and drove a low shot past keeper Ibrahim Diarra. In an intense opening spell, Issa's superbly placed long-ranger was tipped over the bar by Diarra, then Bartlett twice came within a whisker of scoring with his head. Bartlett took good advantage of deft midfield touches from Buckley, Godfrey Sapula and Bradley Carnell and came close to increasing the lead just before half time. He moved onto a free kick from Buckley and drove hard and low but the ball hit the upright. Burkina Faso came face to face with Brian Baloyi on three occassions in the second half. The dreadlocked Chiefs keeper brought the crowd to their feet when he dived with a flourish for a high drive from Magan Ole Diabate. Substitute Lazard Sanon will have nightmares over his missed cue right in front of goal when he ran onto a missed clearance by Lucas Radebe and had only Baloyi to beat. The keeper held his ground grimly, however, and Sanon was caught on the wrong foot in Burkina Faso's closest opportunity to equalise. - Nampa-Sapa |
