Walvis Bay marathon

The first official road race of the year 2001 is scheduled to take place at Walvis Bay on Saturday 27 January and is open to all.

This event is again sponsored by Walvis Bay Salt Refiners and will start and finish at the Duneside High School.

As has been the practice for the past few years, a 10km event will also be held for those athletes that do not care for the longer distance.

In addition, the presenters, Swakop Striders will team up with the rugby playing fraternity and offer a separate section for a 10km relay with teams of ten runners each completing one kilometre.

The marathon runners will set off on their run at 07:00 and, after a short circuit through the town of Walvis Bay, will set off on the "Paaltjies" road where, after having completed 21,1km they will turn around and retrace their footsteps back to the finish at Dune side School.

Entrants in the 10km and relay sections will set off some thirty to forty-five minutes after the marathon runners and will follow the same route until 5km have been completed when they will turn around and retrace their steps back to the finish.

Entries will be taken form 06:00 for the marathon and immediately after the marathon runners have set off for the other events.

The entry fees are as follows:MarathonN$15-0010kmN$10-00As this is the first time for the relay event, there will be no entry fee charged.

Tracksuit badges will be available at the finish on a first-come, first-serve basis for the marathon and 10km runners and every finisher will receive a soft drink.

Many athletes make use of this event to qualify for races in South Africa or, if they have already qualified, to improve on their seeding.

There will be refreshments on sale at the finish.

Marshals will be on duty along the route to point then way and refreshment tables will be placed approximately three kilometres apart.
