Real Madrid go five points clear

MADRID - Real Madrid eased to a 3-0 win at home to Real Zaragoza on Wednesday to stretch their lead at the halfway stage in the Spanish league season to five points.

Goals from Michel Salgado and Raul early in the second half settled the match, which had been postponed from November.

Roberto Carlos fired in a free kick on 77 minutes to complete a satisfying win that gave Real 42 points from 19 matches.

Deportivo Coruna are Real's closest challengers on 37 points, with Barcelona on 36 and Valencia a further point behind.

The European champions oozed confidence from the start and might have been two up inside the first 10 minutes.

Steve McManaman came within a whisker of scoring the first on eight minutes as he played a sharp one-two with Raul, made space with an excellent piece of control and shot just wide of the far post.

Salgado then raced clear down the right and sent in a high, hanging cross that Fernando Morientes headed wide.

Despite having almost all the possession throughout the opening half, Real's first did not arrive until the 50th minute and there was a hint of good fortune about it.

Salgado edged towards the area and as the Zaragoza defence backed off he sent in a low shot that surprised keeper Juanmi and crept in at his near post.

Raul bagged the second six minutes later as he took McManaman's pass, turned past the covering defender and shot across Juanmi and in.

Luis Figo and Morientes both went close before Roberto Carlos wrapped up victory with his cannonball strike from the edge of the box with 13 minutes to go.
