Bombosch starts cycle series on winning note

TOKKIE Bombosch won the first road race of the Windhoek Light Cycling Series on Saturday when he completed the 100km event in two hours 30 minutes and 36 seconds.

Bombosch was a comfortable winner, finishing nearly two minutes ahead of the bunch, which was lead by Pierre Knoetze in second place and Erik Hoffmann in third place.

The junior cyclists Hendrik van Staden and Raphael Bertschinger excelled, coming in with the main senior bunch, with Van Staden just pipping Bertschinger to the line.

The veteran's category, also over 100km, was won by Charles de Beer in 2:34:18, followed by Ludwig Churr (2:34:51) and Hennie Kohne (2:53:23).

The masters category over 50km was won by Koos van Staden, closely followed by Artur Kuppe and Chris Muir, who all crossed the line in 1:17:34.

There was also an exciting finish in the junior's category where the first three cyclists - Nico Ruppel, Egon Laaser and Axel Foerster all crossed the line in 1:17:33.

Swakopmund's Zoe Mitchell won the women's category over 50km in 1:28:53, followed by Petra Laaser in the same time and Hella Rust in 1:31:37.

Jowina van Staden won the girls under 16 category over 38km in 1:11:34, followed by Carmen Bassingthwaighte in the same time and Claudia Otto in 1:50:50.

Heletjie van Staden won the under 14 road bike category over 25km in 47:14, followed by Gunter Rust (48:18) and Robert Pirow (52:22), while Wynand Gouws won the under 14 mountain bike category over 14km in 27:49, followed by Jean-Pierre Hartmann (40:22).

Jan Hendrik Verdoes won the under 12 road bike category over 13km in 23:53, followed by Marnus Verdoes (24:52) and Jens Rust (27:29), while Dietmar Otto won the under 12 mountain bike category over 8km in 15:14, with Ron Verburg coming second (15:19) and Neal Uys third (16:06).
