Brave Warriors impress in warm-up match
HELGE SCHUTZ

THE Brave Warriors warmed up for Friday's World Cup qualifying match against Algeria with an 8-1 demolition of Friends Football Club of Rehoboth at the Independence Stadium yesterday and national coach Ted Dumitru expressed his satisfaction with the players' performance.

"They were good opposition for us - very quick and committed.

But I'm happy with the team's fitness and they responded well to our game plan to get everyone involved in attack and not just the forwards," he said.

Friends gave the Brave Warriors a few problems in the first half, with especially Desmond Snyders and Ricardo Snyders coming close to scoring.

The Brave Warriors, however, soon settled and with Lollo Goraseb back in the midfield along with Congo Hindjou, Antony van Wyk and George Hummel, they created a host of opportunities.

Augustinus Mukoya opened the scoring in the 13th minute when he followed up a Mogale Naruseb shot that was parried by Friends' keeper Donald Vries by stabbing it into the net.

Four minutes later it was Naruseb's turn to find the net with a long range shot after a fine through ball by Congo Hindjou.

Naruseb, who is growing in stature with every game, once again came close in the 25th minute with a powerful shot that was well saved by Vries.

The Brave Warriors had several more chances in the first half, with Mukoya blasting over from close range and Antony van Wyk heading against the bar from a corner.

Eventually in the 42nd minute Mukoya made it 3-0 when he latched onto a great through ball by Hindjou to give Vries no chance.

Namibia's under-20 nationals, Dumisai Jantze, Floris Diergaardt and Steve Mbemukenga were brought on for Hummel, Naruseb and Rodney Doeseb early in the second half and Diergaardt and the diminutive Jantze soon made their mark.

First, however, Danzyl Bruwer made an awful mess of a high bouncing ball, which bounced over his head for Friends' Desmond Snyders to put it into the empty net.

The Warriors were soon on the attack again and from a Mukoya corner in the 58th minute, little Jantze jumped clear to head the ball down to Diergaardt who scored from close range.

Three minutes later Jantze turned provider again as he laid on a fine pass to Hindjou on the right who scored with just the keeper to beat.

In the 69th minute Diergaardt was fouled in the box and Jantze coolly scored from the penalty spot to make the score 6-1.

Diergaardt scored his second goal in the 78th minute when he latched on to replacement keeper Tiro Thlabanello's long clearance to blast the ball into the net, while Mukoya completed his hattrick in the 86th minute when he headed Theodor Tom's pinpoint cross into the net.

Meanwhile, Dumitru also announced that Mohamed Ouseb, Quinton Jacobs and Collin Benjamin would be called up to strengthen the squad for the Algeria match.

He said that Robert Nauseb was not considered after a request by Kaizer Chiefs to rest him.
