Tuesday, January 16, 2001 - Web posted at 11:06:29 AM GMT Liberia demolishes Congo MONROVIA - Liberia beat visiting Republic of Congo 5-1 in a lopsided African Cup of Nations qualifying match on Sunday. The win came just hours after a vehicle filled with Liberian soccer fans lost control not far from the stadium and somersaulted, killing the driver and leaving 11 others seriously injured who were whisked to hospital. Liberian star George Weah, a former world player of the year, was the match's standout player with electrifying passes that led to each of the five goals. Congo Republic's only marker came in the 21st minute from Dongo Christ after a defensive error by Liberian players. Liberia's James Debah scored twice in the 23rd and 60th minutes and Oliver Makor found the net in the 30th minute. Zizi Roberts scored in the 51st minute and substitute Prince Day wrapped up the scoring with a goal in injury time. Throughout the match, police used clubs to beat back fans trying to storm the pitch. The game was played in front of more than 50 000 people who packed into the national stadium, which has an official capacity of just 33 000. - Nampa-Sapa-AP |
