Brothers perish in car smash

A FAMILY celebration turned into a wake at the weekend when two brothers heading to their father's birthday party died in a horrific crash between Ondangwa and OshakatiA 22-year-old student at the Polytechnic, Junias Amupolo (also known as Mandala Manello), and his brother, Frans Ndishishi Amupolo (24), were killed when their BMW sedan left the road and hit a tree at about 07h00 on Saturday.

Their older brother, Andreas Shilongo Amupolo, was driving the BMW when the accident happened.

Shilongo and his girlfriend, Aina Shishake, who is also a student at the Polytechnic, were seriously injured.

Shilongo, who works for Namdeb, was flown to Windhoek on Saturday evening and is being treated in the Roman Catholic Hospital.

Shishake was admitted to the Oshakati State Hospital.

Another passenger - 21-year-old Centaurus pupil Jafet Mutupa Indongo - was lucky to survive the accident unharmed.

The occupants of the vehicle were travelling to Uundombo village in the Omusati region to celebrate their father's sixtieth birthday.

Shilongo, picked up his two brothers, his girlfriend and Indongo in Windhoek on Friday evening and then drove through the night to get to the celebrations.

The three brothers' parents, Erastus and Lilie Amupolo, were said to be in shock after receiving news of the fatal accident "It is a very sad incident because the children were called by the parents to come to celebrate their father's birthday, but the whole celebration has turned into a mourning feast," a relative of the Amupolo family told The Namibian yesterday.
