Namibia adds voice to Moz flood appeal
STAFF REPORTER

GOVERNMENT on Friday said it is deeply disturbed by the destruction and human suffering caused by severe floods in central Mozambique but can only provide morale support at this stage.

Information Permanent Secretary Mocks Shivute told The Namibian that Mozambique had informed the Namibian Government that enough food was available for people in affected areas and the "SADC sister country" mostly needed helicopters to move supplies to affected areas."

" Namibia is not in a position to render such assistance," he said.

Last year Namibia contributed N$5 million in the form of food aid for flood victims in devastated Mozambique.

National airline Air Namibia delivered the emergency supplies to Mozambique.

The floods left hundreds of people dead and close to a million homeless, and destroyed the country's infrastructure.

Shivute said Government hoped that Mozambique's appeal to the world for relief assistance would not fall on deaf ears.

Reuters reported late yesterday South Africa said it was sending helicopters and cargo planes to Mozambique as soon as possible.

President Thabo Mbeki ordered the South African Defence Force to mobilise four Oryx, one King Air and two BK-117 helicopters for rescue operations, Mbeki's spokesman said.
