Friday, February 23, 2001 - Web posted at 8:09:09 AM GMT The Jesaya Nyamu story MINES and Energy Minister Jesaya Nyamu yesterday refused to speak to The Namibian about Government's diamond business in the Democratic Republic of Congo, although he earlier confided in an Afrikaans daily and confirmed Government has been given a mine in the war-torn country. Asked Nyamu rudely: "What do you want? " straight after this newspaper's reporter had greeted him and introduced himself." "What is it that you want to write? Tell me what you want to write," he insisted. Told that The Namibian wanted a follow-up on an interview, he said: "Go to the Republikein and get a copy [of the story]." "No, no, no, you won't get [an interview] because you have no discipline....of not distorting people. If you learn how to discipline yourself, you'll get our co-operation," he said. Asked whether he was referring to the individual reporter, Nyamu said: "I'm talking about your newspaper." "With that he abruptly hung up without answering further questions. |
