Jumbo terminated because of terrorism

OSHAKATI - An elephant said to have been terrorising villagers at Enkuwantale in the Oshana region in the North has been killed by Environment and Tourism officials.

Merven Liseo from the Ministry's Resource Management Department said on Tuesday that the elephant was "eliminated" on Sunday after it became violent and killed four cows at the village.

The official said it was difficult to drive the jumbo back to its home in the Etosha National Game Park because of fears about the safety of villagers, not only at Enkuwantale, but on the way to the Park as well.

According to Liseo, the elephant had also destroyed a number of villagers' fences before "it was eventually disabled on Sunday evening".

It was spotted on Sunday morning by villagers who reported its presence to the authorities.- Nampa
