Thursday, February 22, 2001 - Web posted at 7:14:31 AM GMT NA takes a week's break THE National Assembly is to start work next Tuesday, a week after President Sam Nujoma opened parliament with a call for lawmakers to take their work more seriously. The House was adjourned to next week after members of parliament got a pep talk from Nujoma and the DTA-UDF coalition had kick-started business with questions. Piet Junius of the DTA said he would ask Prime Minister Hage Geingob how Nujoma's swopping of official vehicles would cut costs. His comrade Johan de Waal wanted to know from the Minister of Works, Transport and Communication, Moses Amweelo, when the annual reports for Air Namibia and TransNamib would be tabled. After it became apparent that more DTA MPs were to ask questions, some members became impatient saying the day was only intended for Nujoma's official opening address. Higher Education Minister Nahas Angula said he could not understand how the National Assembly could do business in the presence of judges, who were invited to the opening ceremony. Mose Tjitendero, the National Assembly Speaker, assured Angula there was "no conflict of interest" with what Angula termed a "joint session". Nujoma on Tuesday told MPs that their playing truant was affecting the enactment of laws, and that such behaviour was a "gross neglect of duty". |
