Walvis anniversary marked
MAGGI BARNARD AT WALVIS BAY

THE seventh anniversary of Walvis Bay's reintegration into Namibia on February, 28 1994 was commemorated at the harbour town this week.

Present at the occasion were two main players in the transfer of the town, Finance Minister Nangolo Mbumba and former ambassador Carl von Hirschberg from South Africa."

"I see prosperity in the town.

There are many new shops, hotels and smart-looking bed and breakfast facilities," said Von Hirschberg who returned to Walvis for the first time since the harbour town was handed over to Namibia in 1994."

"The reintegration could only have been for the good of the town and marked the completion of the independence process of Namibia," he said.

Mbumba paid tribute to Von Hirschberg saying he had done a lot to ensure a smooth transition.

"I learnt so much from him."

"Mbumba said he would always have a special place for Walvis Bay in his heart and said: "You can just give me a call when you need some advice."

" He said he was probably the only Minister in Namibia who had earned his position on the basis of working in Walvis Bay.
