Thursday, March 1, 2001 - Web posted at 7:31:07 AM GMT NBC wage talks re-open THE Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) and the Namibia Public Workers Union (Napwu) have re-opened negotiations on possible wage increases for employees. NBC spokesperson Umbi Karuaihe-Swartz told The Namibian that no agreement could be reached last year. The union wanted an average 6,6 per cent increase for the staff while management argued it was facing budgetary constraints and could not meet such a demand. Sources said the union will push for an increase of around 10 per cent as the staff had not received an increase last year. Late last year the two sides thought they had clinched a deal when NBC Board Chairperson Uazuva Kaumbi and Director General Ben Mulongeni agreed to a six per cent across-the-board wage increment. However, the Board then told the two that they did not have the mandate to agree to the deal. The Board apparently said the increment would mean finding an additional N$4,2 million for the cash-strapped broadcaster. Neither the broadcaster nor the union would reveal the progress, or lack of it, on the current talks. |
