Friday, March 2, 2001 - Web posted at 9:06:24 AM GMT Policemen in court on payola charge TWO Policemen have been arrested for allegedly taking bribes from a man involved in a traffic accident. Chief Inspector Angula Amulungu declined to comment on the case when approached by The Namibian. However, impeccable sources named the two Policemen as Warrant Officer Albertus So-Oabeb (42) and Constable Alfeus Barman (30). The two officers - who are both stationed at the Katutura Police Station - made brief appearances in court on charges of corruption last week, but were not asked to plead. The case - which was heard in the Katutura Magistrate's Court - was postponed by Magistrate Johanna Salionga to March 13 for further investigation and the suspects were returned to custody after they were refused bail. A source close to the Police told The Namibian that the two officers were arrested the previous weekend along with two other suspects - Charlie Swartz (43) and Victor Kemba (42). The two officers are accused of accepting a bribe from an Angolan national who is said to have hit someone with his vehicle. The source alleged that the Angolan had offered to pay N$7 000 to the officers and their co-accused "in order to stay out of trouble". However, the officers are alleged to have gone back to the Angolan to demand more money. He apparently became angry and raised the matter with senior Police officers. |
