Friday, March 2, 2001 - Web posted at 8:53:51 AM GMT Unam puts brakes on new cars THE University of Namibia has shelved plans to buy cars for its top management after the institution's Council gave the move the thumbs down, citing a lack of finances. Unam spokesperson Bob Kandetu, however, confirmed that four staff members have bought new vehicles privately and will use their vehicle allowances to pay them off. Top management has a special vehicle scheme which gives them three options. Staff can either make use of a Unam vehicle in their day-to-day activities and receive a petrol card worth N$3 200 a year and return the car after four years, or take a vehicle loan which they have to repay through an allowance they get. Those who benefit from the loan pay for their petrol and the car becomes theirs after four years. The last option is for staff members to buy their own car and claim a certain amount each month. Kandetu, who is also Dean of Students, said he and the head of the Unam Foundation, Human Resource Manager and the Acting Bursar had made own arrangements with financial institutions to buy cars. He said no Unam money was involved in the transactions. |
