Shooting tragedy leaves 3 orphans at Swakop
MAGGI BARNARD

THREE Swakopmund children were orphaned when their father first shot their mother and then himself in the early hours of yesterday morning.

At around 05h30 the children - aged 10, 7 and 5 - heard shots coming from their parents' bedroom at the family's house in Lukas Nehoya Street, Mondesa.

They ran to the bedroom and discovered their parents "lying very still".

Another adult who lives with them immediately phoned the Police.

Inspector Bernhard Uirab said the Police arrived on the scene about 10 minutes later.

They found Petrus Philemon (47) lying on top of his wife, Hilde (32).

Both were dead. A 7.65mm was pistol lying next to them.

The firearm belonged to Petrus.

The Police are still investigating the case but their initial conclusion is that Petrus first shot his wife and then turned the pistol on himself.

He shot Hilde in the left side of her head and the bullet exited on the right side.

According to the wounds on Petrus' body, it appears as if he first shot himself in the leg and then placed the pistol in his mouth and fired another shot, as there was an exit wound at the back of his head.

No foul play from outside is suspected at this stage.

The Police still have to determine how many shots were fired.

Petrus worked at Wesbank Transport at Walvis Bay, while Hilde worked for Namlife Insurance.

Hilde's mother was too shocked to offer any possible explanation as to why her son-in-law may have taken such drastic action.
