Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - Web posted at 8:27:55 AM GMT Girl, 12, up for murder A 12-year-old girl from Dordabis is facing a charge of murder following the disappearance and death of a five-year-old girl at a settlement east of Windhoek over the weekend. The young suspect appeared before Magistrate Harris Salionga in the Windhoek Magistrate's Court in Katutura yesterday. She was released into the care of her mother and warned to appear in court again on Monday. Magistrate Salionga also directed that the child undergo psychological evaluation in the mean time. According to the Namibian Police Public Relations Office, five-year-old Maria Oxorus was found dead on the farm Ibenstein at Dordabis on Monday. She had been missing since Saturday, it was reported. It is suspected that Oxorus was killed when a stone was thrown at her, hitting her on the head. The Police reported in their daily crime bulletin yesterday that it appeared as if the 12-year-old had killed Oxorus accidentally. The incident is the second violent death of a child allegedly at the hands of another child to take place at Dordabis in recent years. A girl at the centre of the previous incident - she was 13 years old when she stabbed a fellow schoolgirl, also 13, to death with a knife in November 1997 - received a wholly suspended four-year prison sentence and was placed in a children's home in Windhoek at the end of her murder trial in the High Court in October 1999. |
