Tuesday, February 27, 2001 - Web posted at 9:08:42 AM GMT Visas now needed for trips to Finland NAMIBIANS who travel to Finland after March 1 this year will need visas, it was announced at a press conference at the Finnish Embassy in Windhoek last week. Finland's Charge d'Affaires Sinikka Antila said the requirement was necessitated by Helsinki's decision to sign the 1996 Schengen Agreement. The implementation of the Schengen Convention on March 25 2001 will harmonise European visa policy in certain EU countries including Finland. As a result Finland's previous visa agreements with countries will be dropped. Visas can be obtained from the Embassy of Finland in the Sanlam building in Windhoek on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 09h00 and 12h00. All applicants are advised to make sure they apply in the recommended time of 14 days in advance to allow for the visa application to be processed. Antila also announced that Sweden will be part of the Schengen visa arrangement from March 25 2001. It has been agreed between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Sweden and Finland that from March 25, the Embassy of Finland in Windhoek will also issue visas to those travelling to Sweden from Namibia. |
