Monday, April 9, 2001 - Web posted at 6:07:18 AM GMT 4 die in Nigeria ethnic violence ABUJA - Police in Nigeria have sent reinforcements to a central village to quell ethnic violence that left at least four people dead and dozens of houses burned to the ground, officials said. Plateau state police spokesman Aminu Yusuf said anti-riot police were dispatched Friday to the remote village of Kundu after three days of clashes there between the Kwale and Tiv ethnic groups. A government-run newspaper quoted witnesses as saying the civilian death toll could be as high as 50. But no independent confirmation was available." "The latest report from the area is that the situation has been brought under effective control. Law and order have been restored," Yusuf said. Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, is riven with sharp ethnic and religious divisions that frequently degenerate into violence. - Nampa-Sapa-AP |
